Dr Andrew Williams is a Psychoanalyst, a Psychiatrist and a Member of the British Psychoanalytical Society. Prior to moving into private practice he worked in the NHS for twenty years, latterly as a Consultant Psychiatrist and Head of the Tavistock Clinic’s Adult Psychotherapy Department.
He received an Honours degree in Physiological Sciences from Oxford University before completing his medical studies, followed by his psychiatric training in psychiatry at the Maudsley and Bethlem Royal Hospitals.
Dr Williams held a position as a Consultant Psychiatrist at the Tavistock and Portman Clinics for the next ten years, specialising in provision and supervision of individual and group psychotherapy. During this time, he was Clinical Lead for the Portman Clinic and Head of Adult Psychiatry for the Trust.
Dr Williams is an intuitive and empathic clinician, using psychoanalytic psychotherapy for clients suffering from a wide range of difficulties such as anxiety, depression, personality difficulties, relationship problems and trauma. Having held a senior position for fifteen years at the Portman Clinic, which specialises in the treatment of compulsive sexual behaviours, Dr Williams is skilled in the psychotherapeutic treatment of sex and pornography addiction.
He has also worked extensively as a Clinical Supervisor, and is able to provide supervision to clinicians working with highly complex presentations, persons who present risks to themselves or others, and persons suffering with sexual addictions.
He is co-author of the books Assessing Risk: A Relational Approach (Routledge) and Forensic Group Psychotherapy: The Portman Clinic Approach (Karnac).
